Nieuwste MacBook Pro’s niet geschikt voor professionals

Apple this week announced revisions to their 13″ and 15″ MacBook Pro laptop line.

Most of the time, when these sorts of things get announced, I just nod my head, acknowledge the new release and move on. I’m not buying laptops all the time, so this stuff doesn’t affect me.

However, in the last two laptop releases Apple is starting to reveal a trend which is very troubling to me as someone who uses Mac gear to edit audio and video — they are taking away the ports I need to connect my stuff.

This began with the laptop update prior to the most recent one with the removal of FireWire 400 ports. Now, in itself, this isn’t a bad thing. FireWire 400 is slow, with a limited cable length. The problem was that they didn’t replace the port with a second FireWire 800 port.

This means that I can’t connect a camera and a second hard drive to my computer without purchasing a FireWire hub. And a hub always runs at the speed of the slowest device connected to it. As well, there are legions of problems with editing video on a single hard drive, unless you are resigned to only editing DV or HDV. ProRes certainly can’t be edited on a single-drive system. Nor can any audio projects with more than a few tracks. Nor can many other HD video formats.

Then, in the latest laptop release for both the 13″ and the 15″ laptop, Apple removed the high-speed Express 34 card and replaced it with the much, Much, MUCH! slower SD card port. The SD card ports runs, according to Apple, at a MAXIMUM of 30% of the speed of an Express 34 card.

How can Apple call a laptop a PROFESSIONAL system when it has fewer ports and the ports it has are slower? They create computers with great software, blindingly fast CPUs, great graphics cards, then reduce the ways to connect external gear!

This is foolish and short-sighted.

Yes, Apple needs lower cost systems to meet the needs of the broader market. But, they also need systems that meet the needs of video and audio professionals. It makes no sense to buy a system that – out of the box – is inadequate for day-to-day video production. Yet Apple describes this as their “Pro” line of laptops.

Apple would say that they have the 17″ laptop. True, but disingenuous. The 17″ is too big to easily travel with, has a screen resolution that exceeds most video projectors which makes it totally impractical for training, and costs more than the 15″ which, up until the latest releases, met our needs for ports and speeds.

Apple might also counter saying that they offer the fully expandable Mac Pro line of computers. While true, this misses the whole point of having a PORTABLE computer for video editing in the field.

For me, though I need a new laptop, none of the current models are attractive for video editing. I’m going to hold off buying until Apple releases a system I can use or I’ll just buy an older MacBook Pro – used.

Infofilm maakt STER-commercial voor Afrika Museum

Vanaf vandaag verschijnt onze tv-commercial van 10 seconden die we maakten voor de tentoonstelling Roots & More in het Afrika Museum te Berg en Dal alvast 25 x op STER Cultuur. Er is ook een radio-commercial van gemaakt.

Roots and More: de reis van de geesten is een thematentoonstelling over spiritualiteit in het werk van hedendaagse kunstenaars uit de Afrikaanse diaspora (specifiek Brazilië, Cuba, Curaçao, Engeland, Haïti, de Verenigde Staten). Roots and More is zowel een primeur in Nederland als in Europa: niet eerder werd met een tentoonstelling op deze actuele wijze aandacht besteed aan de spirituele rijkdom die Afrika de westerse wereld heeft geboden en nog steeds biedt.

Kopstukken met topstukken

Zestien medisch specialisten uit het LUMC worden de komende weken op de Leidse Wetenschapspagina van het Leidsch Dagblad geportretteerd. Daarvoor togen de ‘kopstukken’ uit het LUMC naar het Leidse Museum Boerhaave dat speciaal voor deze serie enkele ‘topstukken’ uit de vitrine haalde. In een interview vertellen ze over hun passie voor het vak en hun toekomstdromen.

Elk ‘kopstuk’ heeft in het filmpje voor de lezers van het Leidsch Dagblad en de sitebezoekers ook nog een vraag. Wie het goede antwoord voor dinsdag mailt naar de specialsredactie@leidschdagblad.nl maakt kans op een prijs. Museum Boerhaave stelt elke week het boek The Finger of God, Anatomical Practice in 17th Century Leiden van conservator Tim Huisman beschikbaar voor een goede inzender.

In het boek speelt het anatomische theater uit 1596, nog te zien in het museum, een grote rol. Ook wordt de prijswinnaar voor de rest van dit jaar gratis lid van de Caeciliastichting en kan onder meer gratis naar het museum.

Infofilm maakt animatie voor Centraal Museum te Utrecht

Een spannende tijdreis naar de 16de eeuw – gratis voor kinderen t/m 12 jaar.
Avontuurlijke durfals kunnen van 20 maart t/m 30 augustus 2009 afreizen naar Reis je Rijk! in het Centraal Museum Utrecht. De interactieve kindertentoonstelling neemt kinderen 500 jaar mee terug in de tijd, naar de periode waarin Jan van Scorel (1495-1562) leefde. Deze belangrijke Utrechtse schilder reisde veel om inspiratie op te doen zo ging hij naar Duitsland, Italië en Jeruzalem. In die tijd was reizen heel bijzonder, niet veel mensen deden dit. Een reis duurde vaak niet een paar weken, maar een paar jaar. Er kon onderweg van alles gebeuren en het was niet gemakkelijk om contact te houden met familie. Ontdek wat reizigers in die tijd allemaal beleefden en maak in het Centraal Museum een spannende tijdreis!

Infofilm mocht voor de tentoonstelling een animatie maken gebaseerd op de ingesproken tekst van Véronique Konings. Vanwege het spoedkarakter werd met vier mensen tegelijk gewerkt met een perfecte workflow via internet. De geleverde bijdragen zijn van (alfabetisch) Bart van Brussel, Robert Busschots, Roger Busschots en Kuba Szutkowski. Het resultaat kan alvast bekeken worden bij YouTube, maar het mooist is natuurlijk de tentoonstelling in het Centraal Museum zelf te bezoeken

Alweer zeer drukke week bij Infofilm

Alweer een drukke week met weinig slaap. Woensdag moet de animatie voor het Centraal Museum in Utrecht klaar zijn. Blijkt toch een enorme klus te zijn, maar het wordt prachtig, heerlijk om tedoen.

Ondertussen werken we ook aan een websitemodule, een tv-spotje en een filmclip bij de tentoonstelling Roots and More, binnenkort te zien in het Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal. Morgen hebben we bovendien een bijeenkomst over de voorlichtingsfilm van de Universiteit Leiden en donderdag komen twee deskundigen van de Radboud universiteit de Integriteits-applicatie verder bespreken. Luc monteerde vandaag ook een korte videoclip over de christelijke visie van de Schepping voor de nieuwe tentoonstelling ‘Van Adam tot DNA’ vanaf juni in Museum Boerhaave te zien. We mogen voor die unieke tentoonstelling diverse audiovisuals maken.

En dan vergeet ik nog de belangrijke werkzaamheden die we moeten doen voor het MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) in Antwerpen. Trouwens ik moet ook nog de voortgang erin houden voor de voorlichtingsfilm die we voor het OLVG ziekenhuis in Amsterdam aan het maken zijn. Ik besef plotseling ook nog dat we opdracht hebben gekregen om met enige spoed de website voor Museum Boerhaave flink te upgraden. En we mogen voor hetzelfde museum een begroting maken om onze animaties en films interactief aan te bieden voor het onderwijs op 15 ipod-touch toestellen. Over volgende week bericht ik wel t.z.t.
